Prompt: Naturalist Rachel Carson writes, “If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder… he needs companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.” While visiting the park with children (or with your memories of being a child), spend time observing the world as if you are seeing, hearing, touching, each thing for the first time. For children, this newness is still very real, and for adults, underneath the habitual ways of perceiving, there is still much mystery to open to. Write from this place of wonder. Engage your children in their own writing. Write about today’s explorations or about memories of childhood wonder.
